Artists From The Region On Show At The Cowra Regional Art Gallery
Two exciting exhibitions opened at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery on Saturday afternoon 3 June.
These were WHILE THE WORLD WAITS, a special exhibition project organised by Arts OutWest showcasing a diverse range of contemporary artworks by 20 leading artists from the central west created during the impact of the global pandemic on the creative visual and performing.
Works include painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, video/animation, glass and textiles.
The second exhibition now on show at the Gallery is LITTLE NOTHINGS: Shani Nottingham - a one-person exhibition of colourful and intricate works made from bread-tags by Cowra based artist Shani Nottingham.
These single use plastic items are usually over looked and end up in landfill as plastic waste, however Nottingham collects, reclaims and transforms bread-tags which bloom to become something ‘other’ that has value and meaning.
Guest speakers were writer and podcaster, Skye Manson who spoke about Shani Nottingham’s works and opened Little Nothings: Shani Nottingham; and Steven Cavanagh exhibition curator of WHILE THE WORLD WAITS who spoke about the background to this unique touring exhibition and the regional artists in the exhibition. These are Bridget Thomas (Bathurst), Cate McCarthy (Yetholme), Gemma Clipsham (Bathurst), Gus Armstrong (Rylstone), Harrie Fasher (Portland), Heather Dunn (Bathurst), Heather Vallance (Orange), Helen Carpenter (Grenfell), Hugh McKinnon (Orange), Jane Tonks (Orange), Laura Baker (Blayney), Lisa Edwards (Lithgow), Henry Simmons & River Yarners (Bathurst), Robert Hirschmann (Portland), Shani Nottingham (Cowra), Stephan de Wit (Parkes), Timothy Seager (Bathurst), Aleshia Lonsdale (Mudgee), Steven Cavanagh (Hill End), Christine McMillan (Kandos). Exhibition dates are 4 June to 2 July 2023. Cowra Regional Art Gallery is located at 77 Darling Street Cowra opposite the World Peace Bell. Gallery open hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 4pm, Sunday 10am – 2pm. Admission free. For more information go to www.cowraartgallery.com.au.
