Lead by Art Teacher Lucy Hansen, students at Cowra High School are creating a Wiradjuri themed mural that will be placed on display at the Cowra Aquatic Centre.

The mural, which is due to be completed sometime next term, is an Aboriginal artwork based on the Lachlan River in Cowra.

It has been designed to connect to the pool’s Aboriginal name - “Billabong” - as well as showcasing the local waterway in the Lachlan River.

The mural will feature the river itself, as well as local fish, yabbies, the river bank, gum trees and other symbols.

It will measure 1.5 metres by 2 metres, and will be displayed near the front entrance of the Aquatic Centre.

Ms Hansen said students began working on it three weeks ago, and continue to work on it outside of normal class time once per fortnight.

“We have a mix of all students, both indigenous and non-indigenous, working on it, and we are seeking a local Wiradjuri artist to help them paint it,” she said. “The Aquatic Centre contacted the school to see if it was interested in creating art for the front entrance, to create a more positive environment at the pool.” “They have paid for the base of the mural, and we are doing the painting for it.” Once the mural is completed it will be officially opened at the Aquatic Centre, and remain there permanently.

Ms Hansen has worked at Cowra High School since 2015, and also worked with students to create murals at the Cowra Services Club and Cowra High School.
