Cowra CBD redevelopment done
The Cowra CBD has undergone a facelift that will boost the region’s economy, thanks to funding from the Australian Government.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack said the project was part of the Australian Government’s commitment to community infrastructure in regional New South Wales.
“This project has invested in Cowra’s economy by supporting 12 jobs during construction, while improving the CBD for locals,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“The project demolished and rebuilt 3,500 square metres of footpath to provide disabled access into businesses, improving accessibility, pedestrian movement and streetscape character.
“These works will boost visitor numbers and attract these new businesses into the Cowra centre.”
Cowra Shire Mayor Bill West said the improved town centre would provide social and economic benefits for Cowra.
“This project replaced the existing footpath pavement, installed new street furniture, awning lighting and landscaping and improved the interface with Squire Park,” Cr West said.
“The upgrade provides an attractive environment for the Cowra community to conduct business and social activities and makes us even prouder of our town.
“This project particularly improves access and safety for the elderly, people with disabilities and people with young families. New, safe and modern footpath surfaces were installed as well as disabled access to the premises of an additional 22 shops.”
The project is jointly funded with the Australian Government committing $829,619 and Cowra Shire Council $2,697,307.
The Australian Government contribution was funded under its Building Better Regions Fund. This is a $1.04 billion investment designed to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.
