Cowra Shire Council has started a condolence book and lowered its flags to half mast, following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on Friday morning AEST.

Council said it is receiving a daily roll-out of information and may do more if advised, but is currently commemorating the Queen by inviting members of the public to sign a condolence book. It has also lowered the flags at the front of its office to half mast, in line with protocols for governments.

The portrait of the Queen in the Council Chambers will remain until the end of the official mourning period of the Queen’s death.

A Council spokesperson said the condolence book could be signed in person at Council’s customer service centre at 116 Kendal Street, Cowra, or online at pmc.gov.au/her-majesty-the-queen. King Charles III was formally proclaimed King of Australia and NSW at special ceremonies held in Canberra and Sydney on Sunday, following his proclamation as King of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and its realms on Saturday AEST.

The Queen visited nearby towns in the Central West during her many visits to Australia, including Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo.

Local Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, said the Queen will always be remembered as a wonderful and gracious person.

“As editor of The Daily Advertiser, I had the great privilege to meet the Queen on

21 March 2000 whilst she was in Sydney. With a royal grace and presence certainly befitting of her royal title, Her Majesty met with several people,” he said.

“I can remember lining up in a long line of press representatives to meet the Queen. I made sure I was last in line.” “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will always be remembered as a wonderful and gracious person. A true icon of our times. Her Majesty has been a mainstay in a period of great change in human history and her loss will be felt for a long time.”

Australia will observe a national day of mourning and public holiday in commemoration of the Queen’s death, next Thursday 22nd September. Her funeral will be held in London next Monday, 19th September.
