Cowra residents will take to the polls for the Federal Division of Riverina this Saturday to elect its next Member Of Parliament to represent it in Canberra, as part of the 2022 Federal Election.
Political commentators across the country have continuously tipped a tight contest in the election, and it could be so locally as well, with eight candidates putting their hats in the ring to be elected to the seat of Riverina, of which Cowra is a part of.
Current Member For Riverina Michael McCormack will be vying for a 5th term in office, with the former journalist having held the seat since the 2010 election.
The Nationals have held the seat since it took its current incarnation in 1993, and held it for a combined 45 years during its first incarnation between 1901 and 1984.
Hoping to get a swing against Mr McCormack and The Nationals are Labor’s Mark Jeffreson, The Greens’ Michael Organ, United Australia Party’s Daniel Martelozzo, One Nation’s Richard Orchard, the Shootters, Fishers and Farmers’ Steve Karaitiana, the Liberal Democrats’ Dean McCrae and independent Darren Ciavarella
Mr Jeffreson states on his website he will stand for more funding for health and education, while Mr Organ states that he will fight for improved environmental laws.
Mr Martelozzo states he will fight for people’s freedoms and an end to mandates, while Mr Orchard will support policies to improve apprentice and vocational skills shortages.
Mr Karaitiana is a current Forbes Shire Councillor, and Mr McCrae will fight for more freedom and less government intervention. Mr Ciavarella will fight for anti-corruption and a royal commission into property dealings.
Polling locations in Cowra Shire include Cowra Tennis Club, Mulyan Public School, Cowra Public School, Billimari Public Hall, Woodstock Public School, Morongla Hall, Gooloogong War Memorial Hall. Pre-polling is open now at the Cowra Uniting Church.
