Cowra’s Ky Garratt is off to Fiji in June to compete at the Oceania Athletocs Champonships in the Hammer Throw, after taking out the national title in Adelaide last month.

It was his fourth title, after taking out the Australian All Schools national titles in September and December 2023, and December 2022. He was pushed hard by Queensland’s Connor Hopgood, who came within a metre of Garratt in the third round.

However Garratt came up with his best throw when it counted the most in the final round, throwing a distance of 63.78 metres, well clear of Hopgood’s best effort of 62 metres.

Finishing third was NSW’s Alex Goetz with 59.79 metres.

Garratt said the distances his opponents were throwing put the pressure on him to step up in the competition.

“A lot of the boys were throwing personal bests of around 60 metres which put pressure on me to perform and throw up to my best,” he said.

“It was a really good comp out there.” The Oceania titles will run in Suva from June 4 to June 8.
