McCormack To Fight For Cowra On Wyangala Dam
Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack said he will continue fighting for the best interests of Cowra, after the NSW Government hinted last week that the Wyangala Dam wall extension may be postponed indefinitely.
While an official announcement is yet to be made, biodiversity offsets, mandatory environmental liabilities for projects such as this, have reportedly inflated the project’s cost and impacted its financial viability. The project is jointly funded by the NSW and Federal Governments, but the NSW Government is administering the project and is ultimately the decision maker on it.
However, with Cowra set to take an economical hit should the project be delayed or abandoned, Mr McCormack said he will continue advocating for it to go ahead. “I have spoken to NSW Minister for Water Melinda Pavey, the State Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke and Cowra Shire Mayor Bill West regarding this issue and will continue to work collaboratively with all levels of government to ensure the best outcomes for the communities which stand to benefit from this important water infrastructure project,” he said.
