Cowra’s sculpture park was officially launched at the Cowra Japanese Garden last Wednesday, with Macquarie University announcing it will be donating more sculptures to Cowra.
The sculptures, located within the Cowra Peace Precinct out the front of Japanese Garden, were donated by the Macquarie University Art Gallery and installed by the Cowra Regional Art Gallery, with the first sculptures being erected in January last year.
Macquarie University Art Gallery Senior Curator Rhonda Davis said she was extremely impressed with Cowra’s sculp-ture park, and there would be more sculptures on their way in the near future.
“We have been coming to Cowra now for 15 years, and it’s an honour and privilege to officially launch the sculpture park,” she said.
“Cowra Regional Art Gallery Director Brian Langer has really made it shine, and we’re hoping now to donate another two or three sculptures.”
Cowra Mayor Bill West Cowra Shire Council, through its Cowra Regional Art Gallery, would continue to work with Macquarie University in procuring more sculptures over the next 15 years.
“It adds to the importance of the Cowra Peace Precinct, which also features the Cowra Japanese Garden and the Cowra POW Camp,” he said.
Mrs Davis said the Cowra Art Gallery had created a “new journey” for her university’s sculptures by accepting them and placing them in a location regularly visited by many tourists.
“This launch cements the relationship between our university and the Cowra Art Gallery,” she said.
Mr Langer described the sculpture park as a “magnificent opportunity” to display art to the tourists that see it on their way to the Japanese Garden.
“It makes our gallery unique in that we have our main gallery as well as this sculpture park that we’re responsible for,” he said.
