Shani Nottingham Featured In Work Of Art Showcase And Forum In Orange
Eight women from the Central West region will be celebrated along with 53 others from across the state in the culmination of this 18-month women’s business development program, including Cowra’s Shani Nottingham.
Work of Art not only celebrates these regional artists but also sparks important conversations about the future of regional arts.
Hosted across multiple venues in and around the Orange Cultural Precinct and presented in collaboration with partners including Theatre Network NSW, Creative Plus Business and Arts OutWest, the program includes a variety of performances, art exhibits and dynamic discussion.
Prominent mentors such as musician Fanny Lumsden, former Archibald Prize winner Cherry Hood and film and television producer Lois Randall will share their insights as regional women in the arts and all those attending the forum will be invited into these discussions covering issues of sustainability, inclusion and regional identity in the arts and creative industries.
Those more interested in active art-making can choose across seven workshops ranging from weaving to woodworking as meditative practice.
Additionally there will be opportunities for the community to get involved through free exhibitions at the 2nd Orange Scout Hall, the CWA Hall Orange and the Hotel Canobolas. Theatre performances will take place in the late afternoon at the Uniting Church in Anson Street and live music can be heard in the Cultural Precinct and at Badlands Brewery.
Abby Smith performs at both the free public open air concert (Thursday 14 Nov 12 and noon, outdoors at Orange Cultural Precinct) and a solo show at Badlands Brewery (Friday 15 Nov at 9pm); Theatre maker Catherine McNamara will present a small showing of her work in development ViV! (Thursday 14 Nov 5.30pm at the Uniting Church Orange); TC Overson will give a short presentation on Thursday 15 at 11.30am as part of the event.
Visual artists Ikuko Fujisawa, Lucy Smith, Maria Shaw, Shani Nottingham, Susan Checinski and TC Overson will have work in the various free public exhibitions running 14-15 November, 10am-5pm at the 2nd Orange Scout Hall, the CWA Hall Orange and the Hotel Canobolas.
Work of Art participants will also hear from Sally MacLennan from Orange Regional Museum about a new opportunity to creatively respond to an object from their collection (Thursday 14 Nov, 11am, at Orange Regional Museum).
RANSW CEO, Dr Tracey Callinan OAM, said “I am a firm believer that regional NSW is the most dynamic and exciting place to be in the Australian arts industry, and this showcase and forum event is our way of demonstrating that.
This will be a much-needed opportunity for the industry to gather in celebration of the incredible work happening in the regions and plot the best way forward for regional arts practitioners in times of change.”
