Government Bill To Ban Nazi Symbols Passes Lower House

The NSW Government’s bill to criminalise knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public without a reasonable excuse has passed the Lower House today with unanimous support.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said the proposed amendment to the Crimes Act 1900, introduced by the NSW Government, will provide important, additional safeguards against hate speech and vilification in NSW.

The maximum penalty for the new offence will be 12 months’ imprisonment or a $11,000 fine or both for an individual; or a fine of $55,000 for a corporation. NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure said this Bill reaffirms the NSW Government’s position that hate has no place in our tolerant multicultural society.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Member for Vaucluse, Gabrielle Upton said, “This bill is a clear statement from the NSW Government on behalf of the community that the display of Nazi symbols, and the hatred and bigotry they invoke and inspire, has absolutely no place in our community.”

Safer Traffic Routes Through Better Lighting

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has announced $66,000 for Cowra Shire Concil to improve road conditions for motorists traveling at night.

The grants under the NSW Government’s Traffic Route Lighting Subsidy Scheme will cover capital costs for new and improved lighting, maintenance work and energy consumption costs across the region.

“Better visibility is a safety win for all road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” Ms Cooke said.

“Under this scheme, we are compensating Council’s for operational costs associated with eligible street lighting, which will help reduce the number of night-time accidents.”

Councils can receive a subsidy of up to 50 per cent of the Australian Energy Regulator’s approved pricing to assist in rolling out a better level of lighting than otherwise provided on state, regional and designated roads.

New Electricity Contract To Reduce Council Emissions

Cowra Council has secured a new renewable electricity contract with Iberdrola Australia to supply its large sites and streetlighting from 1 January 2023. Coordinated by Central NSW Joint Organisation, the electricity will be supplied from the Bodangora Wind Farm near Wellington NSW, and Council has the option to change to the Flyers Creek Wind Farm near Blayney when it becomes operational.

“We’ve all read in the news in recent months that electricity prices are sky-rocketing, and this new deal means Council can have price certainty in the coming years. The eight-year contract with Iberdrola Australia is a huge achievement for Council, and we are excited that we were able to secure such a great deal in the current electricity market,” said Mayor of Cowra, Cr Bill West. “We are delighted to be partnering with Councils in the Central NSW and Riverina regions, enabling them to access reliable and affordable clean energy backed by our wind farms and flexible, fast-start assets. We have worked with the Councils and communities in these regions for many years and we are very pleased to be deepening our partnership with them,” said Iberdrola Australia Managing Director and CEO, Ross Rolfe AO.
