Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging Cowra residents to be a part of the new Cowra Wheelchair Basketball Club, with people of all levels of ability invited to join.

Ms Cooke said the club is a great way to not only develop new skills, but to meet new people, and be a part of an exciting new era for sport in Cowra.

“The official launch of the Wheelchair Basketball Club in Cowra is a significant milestone for the community and a step towards enhancing inclusivity and sports opportunities for people of all ages and with all levels of ability,” Ms Cooke said.

“The new club aims to foster a more inclusive environment and promote the physical and social benefits of sports for everyone, including manual wheelchair users.

“This club will boost sporting opportunities in Cowra, and will certainly help inspire and empower individuals to achieve their full potential,” she said.

Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT CEO Mick Garnett said the club will be based at Cowra High School, with weekly training sessions taking place every Monday from 4pm to 5:30pm.

“We are determined to grow this club and make it a lasting asset for the community,” Mr Garnett said.

“We’ve got a great coach with Sam Haeata committed to building the club, and potentially one day, eventually getting a representative side together.

“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but there’s no reason why we can’t build enough momentum and get to the stage where we are able to take part in next year’s Wheelchair Basketball Club Challenge, which is a competition taking in all of NSW and the ACT.

“Everyone is welcome at the club; it’s free, and we provide all the equipment.

We just need ‘bums in seats’,” he said.
